The pool liner is important because it gives color to the water and contributes to the aesthetic success of your pool. It's also linked to the construction technique you choose, as it can be a waterproof liner - essential for most modular structures (panels, blocks, etc.) - or simply a finishing coat (only for monoblock concrete pools).

The different pool waterproofing systems

There are several ways to make your pool more watertight. It depends on the type of pool you have. Sometimes it is an extra layer, a coating that is added to the structure to make it watertight.

The different types of swimming pools

Monocoque pools

Monocoque pools are manufactured using moulds in which several layers of resin are applied and superimposed. They are also known as hull or monobloc pools.

Once the framework is formed and dry, several layers of gelcoat are applied to waterproof it and give it its characteristic smooth and shiny appearance.
Due to its ease of installation, this type of pool has had some success and fans.
Regarding water resistance, the main risks are cracks and breaks that can appear if the shell deforms: pressure on the ground, pool left empty or abandoned for too long.

Reinforced concrete pools

Concrete pools are made in one piece just like monohull pools. Their skeleton is a steel reinforcement on which concrete is sprayed under high pressure.

This technique, also known as gunning, makes it possible to compact the concrete layer and reach all the corners of the steel structure. Finally, this provides a homogeneous brick that has a high resistance and is perfectly waterproof.

The different waterproof coatings for swimming pools

There are 4 types of waterproof coatings: liner, reinforced membrane, polyester, coated.

The pool liner

Whether for above-ground or inground pools, the liner is the best known and most widely used coating. It is a PVC sheet that is produced and cut to fit the size of the pool perfectly.

The reinforced PVC membrane

The reinforced membrane is a superior range of liner. It contains 3 PVC sheets with a polyester weave in between. Unlike the liner, it is not installed as a cover over the pool. Several layers are assembled and glued together by welding.

Polyester swimming pool lining

Like monocoque pools, it is a superposition of layers of fiberglass and polyester resin that are applied to the walls, floor and corners of the pool. This is done either by spraying with a machine or by hand. The finish consists of one or more layers of gelcoat to smooth the appearance and improve water resistance.

Pool coatings

The plaster is dependent on and integral with its support, if cracks appear, water will run through it. As with decorative paints, the rendering must be redone every 3 to 5 years. In the world of in-ground swimming pools, this is a less frequent waterproofing process than others. But it has its followers.
